Remove the hinges deadbolt door knob and any other hardware. Even if the door hasn t previously been painted treated or sanded it s also good to sand it down to open up the fibers and help it accept the stain more easily. Use a sanding sponge above on inside corners where fingers can t reach. Smooth out chipped paint and imperfections from previous paint jobs.

Use an orbital finish sander or sanding pad with 220 grit sandpaper to sand the door quickly and remove minor imperfections. Fold a half sheet of 100 grit sandpaper in thirds press it into a section of the profile with your fingertips then rub back and forth in long strokes over the length of the molding. The main goal is to give your door a little tooth for the new paint or primer to adhere to. Wipe off the door with a damp rag to remove any sawdust. Sand the door smooth.

This will roughen the surface a little and allow the primer to adhere better. Usually with a refinish job sanding is awfully time consuming especially on raised panel doors. Lightly sand the entire door. Remove the hinge pins out of the hinges on the interior side of the door.

Avoid sanding inside if possible. Always sand with the grain of the wood. If there s some dye stain left in the wood i use chlorine bleach which is good for removing dye stains without affecting the natural color of the wood.

This is usually the most time consuming tedious part of the project. Door sanding can be difficult. While some of you will have them unmounted and laying down making it easier i bet that most of you want to do it with the doors still mounted which is much more. Sand the door again with 150 grit followed by 220 grit sandpaper.

Happily refinishing a door is easier than you might think. No need to bust out the power sander you can use a sanding block or sheet of sand paper.
